Joe Brady a ‘name to watch’ for Jaguars head coach opening

After missing out on Liam Coen, if the Jacksonville Jaguars are going to expand their head coaching search, one “name to watch,” according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, is Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator Joe Brady.

Brady was a part of the first round of interviews that the Jaguars held for their head coaching opening.

Currently, Robert Saleh and Patrick Graham are the only candidates scheduled to have a second interview at this time.

As I discussed recently, with Saleh and Graham both being defensive coaches, if the Jaguars potentially want an offensive perspective in charge of the team, they could choose to bring in Brady, or Kellen Moore or Todd Monken–all of whom are offensive coordinators.

This past season was Brady’s first as the Bills full-time offensive coordinator. Before that, he was the quarterbacks coach from 2022-2023 and filled the offensive coordinator role in an interim capacity during the 2023 season.

Brady was also the Carolina Panthers offensive play-caller in 2020-2021 before joining the Bills.

Under Brady, the Bills offense has been extremely effective both on the ground and through the air. They finished the regular season ranked top-10 in both yards per rush and yards per pass. They were also second in scoring behind only the Lions.

As Brady noted in an interview with the Bills team site, the offense is built around the strengths of quarterback Josh Allen, while also being mindful of what the skill position players do well and putting them in positions to succeed.

You can also see the adaptability of Brady’s offense with how the Bills operate on a week-to-week basis, sometimes relying heavily on Allen and other times relying heavily on the run game. It’s all dependent upon the opponent and what the game-plan calls for.

“There’ll be some elements of things that I believe in, but it’s more of like, tell me who we have on our football team and the guys and what they can do well and we’re going to do that,” Brady said.

As of now, there is no word on whether or not the Jaguars are going to bring Brady in for a second interview.

Since the Bills are still in the playoffs, the soonest that Brady could be available for an in-person interview is next week, after the AFC Championship.
