Joe Biden under fire after comments deemed 'anti-Irish' during recent appearance

President Biden has come under fire in recent days after making a comment about the Irish that rubbed many people the wrong way on social media.

The US President was speaking at a U.S. veterans town hall in the State of Delaware when he made a joke that some are deeming ‘anti-irish’.

During his speech on Friday, Biden said: “I may be Irish but I'm not stupid”.

Amid the same outing, Biden also mixed up Jill Biden's family name, saying: “I married Dominic Giacoppa's daughter".

However, Dominic Giacoppa was actually Jill's grandfather and her father's name was Donald Jacobs.

People ran to social media in the aftermath of his speech - some were more offended than others with one person branding it “despicable” while another said it was simply “old school anti-Irish stereotyping”.

However, the general consensus was not one of acceptance of his comments. One person commented on the clip saying: “Did Biden just insinuate the Irish are stupid?”

Another said: “That is despicable and an insult to an entire nation and its emigrants across the globe.”

One journalist on Twitter then asked: 'How do the Irish feel about this comment Biden just made?' to which one user responded: 'we don't get offended but maybe we should.'

Another person said: “True Irish people, like myself, don’t give a flying....

“Call us whatever you want. We don’t offend easily. Now come sit. Have a beer … Slainte.”
