Joe Biden says it’s ‘time to outlaw’ AR-15 assault rifles after Donald Trump assassination attempt

US President Joe Biden has called for a ban on the type of assault weapon used in the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

Thomas Matthew Crooks used an AR-15 assault rifle in his bid to kill Mr Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, before being shot dead by the Secret Service.

Speaking at the NAACP convention in Las Vegas, Mr Biden said the attack showed by assault weapons needed to be outlawed.

“An AR-15 was used in the shooting of Donald Trump. This was the assault weapon that killed so many others, including children. It’s time to outlaw them,” he said.

In a reference to his involvement in passing the 1994 assault federal weapons ban, which expired 10 years later, Mr Biden said: “I did it once, and I will do it again.”

The Democratic incumbent in the Oval Office said curbing political violence in the country should mean combating all kinds of bloodshed, saying: “Our politics have become too divided.”

However, he added, criticising Mr Trump’s record as president: “Just because we must lower the temperature in our politics as it relates to violence doesn't mean we should stop telling the truth.”

Nikki Haley, the former UN ambassador who was Mr Trump's final challenger in the Republican primary, directly addressed her supporters after taking to the stage to a mix of cheers and boos.

"My message to them is simple: You don't have to agree with Trump 100% of the time to vote for him," Ms Haley said.

She was followed by Florida governor Ron DeSantis, a one-time ally of Mr Trump turned primary rival who has worked to rebuild his relationship with the former president since dropping out of the primary.

"Donald Trump has been demonised. He's been sued. He's been prosecuted. And he nearly lost his life," Mr DeSantis told the crowd. "We cannot let him down. And we cannot let America down."

Outside of the conference, police officers shot and killed a man who was wielding two knives on Tuesday.

Milwaukee Police chief Jeffrey Norman said at a news conference that five police officers from Columbus, Ohio opened fire on the man after he ignored commands to drop the knives and then charged at an unarmed person.
