Joe Biden's Irish ancestry explained: US President's links to Ballina and Louth

Joe Biden's visit to Ireland has already left officials hard at work with one week to go before his Belfast arrival.

The US President is set to take part in official commemorations that mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement. The 80-year-old is no stranger to Ireland, having visited on multiple occasions and spoken fondly of his Irish roots.

The Pennsylvania native has an Irish great-grandfather, who was born in Co Louth. He has Irish links through both his maternal and paternal ancestry and is described as being five eights Irish.

Of Joe's sixteen great-grandparents, ten were born on the island of Ireland. He has family connections to both Mayo and Louth and once described Ireland's smallest county as "heaven" while visiting during his tenure as Vice-President.

Joe's family links are tied to the Finnegans in Louth and the Blewitts in Mayo. His Irish relatives are bracing themselves for his upcoming visit, according to the Irish Mirror.

Joe will land in Ireland on April 11. The full itinerary for his visit has not been released but it is expected that he will meet with President Michael D Higgins at some point during his stay.
