Joe Biden references message from Queen in 9/11 remembrance speech

Joe Biden reference the Queen's memorable quote from the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist atrocities to remember the victims 21 years on.

Speaking at a commemoration, the US President said the late monarch's words remain as poignant as they did when she offered her condolences back in 2001.

Nearly 3,000 people died when hijackers crashed passenger jets into New York’s World Trade Centre towers and The Pentagon.

He said he remembered the words of comfort that the Queen had provided to the United States more than two decades ago.

"I remember a message sent from Queen Elizabeth telling us grief is the price we pay for love,” said Mr Biden, quoting part of the her address to America, on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

“Many of us have experienced that grief, and you’ve all experienced it. And on this day, when the price feels so great, Jill and I are holding all of you close to our hearts.

“I hope we’ll remember that amidst those dark days, we dug deep, we cared for each other, and we came together."

He went on: “It’s good to remember. These memories help us heal. But they can also open up the hurt and take us back to that moment when the grief was so raw.

“But it’s not enough to stand up for democracy once a year or every now and then. It’s something we have to do every single day. So this is a day not only to remember, but a day of renewal and resolve for each and every American.”

The White House has confirmed that Mr Biden will attend the funeral at Westminster Abbey next Monday, along with his wife, Dr Jill Biden.

When President Biden and the First Lady met the Queen last June at Windsor Castle, he said the monarch reminded him of his mother.

"We had a long talk. She was very generous," he said of their meeting.

Following her death, he was one of the first world leaders to pay tribute.

He said on Thursday: "Queen Elizabeth II was a stateswoman of unmatched dignity and constancy who deepened the bedrock alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States. She helped make our relationship special.

"In a world of constant change, she was a steadying presence and a source of comfort and pride for generations of Britons, including many who have never known their country without her.
