Rangers are starting to ramp up their summer shopping spree with Antonio Colak set to sign while Joe Aribo gets set for his big money move down south. Celtic have already been active but as usual when it comes to the Glasgow rivals, punters like to chuck stones across the city.
Eddie Easson, Ballingry, said: “Celtic getting their business done early. Rangers trying to push cheap deals through, just maybe they need the Aribo money in first. When will their loyal fans realise they are in massive debt and maybe the board are trying to balance the books? The 'For Sale’ signs will be hanging round the necks of Kent, Bassey and Morelos soon.”
Paddy Gowans emailed: “Let's face it, £10m for Aribo is Mickey Mouse money to these top tier English clubs. If he fails they write it off and he ends up on the scrapheap like most of the prima donnas.”
Hotline caller Ian McKay yesterday claimed Rangers would be champions and Europa League winners if key men hadn’t been crocked.
But Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: “So another excuse for Rangers not winning the league last season was injuries. I totally agree and think it was unfair that Rangers were the only team to get injuries. I’m sure we will get more excuses before the end of the week – watch this space."
Other Gers fans are optimistic about the season ahead though. John Bruce, Glasgow, said: “Rangers supporters will never forget what Steven Gerrard did for our club – especially bringing us 55. Stopping the fabled 10-in-a-row was a dagger in the heart of every Celtic fan, possibly eclipsing the signing of Mo Johnston, so Gerrard certainly left his mark. But if the Bears are honest, the Rangers team was looking jaded when Gerrard left.
“In seven short months, Gio van Bronckhorst took Rangers to a European final and won the Scottish Cup – without a striker. If the manager achieved this in just over half a season, imagine what he will do in a full season, with a full pre-season training behind him and a full transfer window to strengthen our squad of European finalists.”
Someone could do with a holiday though as Bob Sheridan emailed: “Look how far we have fallen looking at the present squads for Celtic and Rangers I cannot see anyone who I would consider better than what was at Ibrox or Parkhead before.
“Names from the past Baxter, Greig, Gazza, Laudrup, Ferguson, Gough, McCoist, McNeill, Dalglish, Larsson, McStay – all outstanding players. I would not put anyone in the present teams in the same class. A complete overhaul is required from grass roots upwards or we will end up playing in the same leagues as Ireland, Wales and Malta, with all the other so-called minnows.”
That’s the spirit. Likewise there was a barbed line from Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, who said: “I watched the start of the Women's European Championship and what a great idea they have come up with.
“All women officials, all women commentators and all women experts in the studio. “I think we should try it in the men's game with all men. Or would that be considered sexist?”
Careful now. Elsewhere, there could be some major moves down south and Alan Lough, Dunbar, said: “As a lifelong Man Utd fan, I have no interest in where Cristiano Ronaldo goes next. I just want him away from Man Utd.”
He’ll always be welcome in Scotland.
