Joe Aribo insists Leipzig tie is still alive as he issues Rangers rallying call ahead of Ibrox return leg

Joe Aribo insists Leipzig tie is still alive as he issues Rangers rallying call ahead of Ibrox return leg

JOE ARIBO remains confident that Rangers can book their spot in the final of the Europa League despite going down 1-0 at the hands of RB Leipzig in the first leg of their semi-final.

The Ibrox outfit were dealt a cruel blow late on as Angelino arrowed a volley into the back of the net with just five minutes remaining of the 90 minutes.

Leipzig dominated proceedings in Germany, but Rangers defended well and looked solid as a unit as they attempted to break on the counter.

Aribo was utilised as the central figure in a false nine formation, and he is sure with a full Ibrox behind them, that Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team can get the job done next week in Glasgow.

He said: “All in all the boys are disappointed in the end. We thought we could have seen the game out.

“It was disappointing to see that goal go in, but there is still a lot to play for in the tie and we will be ready to go at Ibrox next week.

“We just wanted to stay compact and make it difficult for them to breakthrough us. We did that and for most parts, they didn’t have many chances, despite getting that goal late on in the game.

“It was all about concentration and hard work. The boys needed to give their all and work hard for everyone on the pitch and that is what we did out there.

“I am happy to play anywhere. First of all I am just happy to be out there on the pitch, but getting in those areas behind midfielders is where I see myself.

“We wanted to get our fullbacks up high and get balls in their box because we knew that could be a threat.

“We had a few half-chances, but we just didn’t really get the break of the ball and that is what happened out there.”

Aribo added: “We will listen to what the boss has to say and take on the pointers he wants us to do in order to get the result and win the game.

“The tie is still alive. We know what can happen at Ibrox with a crowd backing us 100 per cent. I can’t wait for it.”
