Joe Anderson set for Sunderland medical and transfer talks after Everton accept bid for defender

Joe Anderson is on his way to Sunderland to undergo a medical and discuss terms after Everton accepted a bid for the defender.

Stalybridge-born Anderson joined Everton at the age of 15, but the ECHO understands Anderson has been granted permission to travel to the North East as a move to the Stadium of Light moves closer after a bid was accepted on Sunday morning.

Anderson signed a new two-year contract with Everton back in July 2022 to keep him at the club until the end of June 2024, however with him yet to make a first-team appearance, his time at Goodison Park looks to be coming to an end.

Speaking about transfers after his side’s 1-1 FA Cup draw with Fulham on Saturday, Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray said: "What are we expecting? Our head of recruitment is outside that door and I’ll be speaking to him in a minute.

“I don’t really know. I’m the head coach, not the manager, but I do know that we need some support, or the young team does.

"Hopefully there’s some business to be done in the next few days, but I would say as well it’s fantastic that young Gelhardt is coming in. Pierre came on the pitch today and looks a real talent.

"We just need some bodies. You see our bench today, we had a 15-year-old on the pitch and the other three lads that didn’t get on the pitch were 16, 17 years-old.

“We are really short on numbers and we picked up an injury. If we have 18 league games to go, we probably need a bit of help."
