Jodie Comer wins Olivier award for 'best performance ever seen'

Jodie Comer bagged herself an award for her West End debut performance at the Olivier Awards last night.

The Liverpool-born actress, best known for her role in Killing Eve, won Best Actress for her role as Tessa in Prima Facie. The stage play, which ran at the Harold Pinter theatre in London last year, is a one-woman show by Suzie Miller and also won the coveted Best New Play award.

It follows Jodie as she plays a barrister specialising in defending people accused of sexual assault, who questions the system after being date-raped. She researched the role by sitting in on court cases and speaking to barristers, judges and police offers who were "very honest" about how they had to "put aside their own feelings as a woman, to commit to the job that they do".

In her acceptance speech, Jodie, 30, said: "To any kids who haven't been to drama school, who can't afford to go, have been rejected - don't let anyone tell you it's impossible."

She added that at the first West End preview, she could hear gasps from women in the audience and was aware that Prima Facie had “started a conversation” and that if theatre or television can do that then it is “second to none”

Fans agreed that her performance was powerful and branded it the "best they had ever seen". After Jodie won the award, Twitter was swamped with congratulations for the star.

Jules said: "So well deserved. Congratulations to Jodie Comer! - she is a different class #JodieComer".

Sue said: "It was certainly the best performance I have ever seen...#JodieComer was brilliant! A well deserved award."

Abby said: "Most electrifying stage performance I’ve ever seen. Brava, bravissima #JodieComer."

Sophie said: "One of the best plays I have ever seen, led by the incredibly talented #JodieComer who thoroughly deserves this win. Captivating an audience in a one woman show for two hours without missing a step. She is just wonderful! #OlivierAwards."
