Jodie Comer had to bring an abrupt end to her one-woman stage show in New York after struggling to breathe amid New York's poor air quality.
The city's air quality levels spiked to hazardous on Wednesday as Canadian wildfire hazes continued. An advisory alert for residents in the city was issued, with schools in NYC and nearby Washington DC not offering outdoor activities.
And the Brit actress was forced to stop the Prima Facie show on Broadway after running into breathing difficulties.
She was reportedly 10 minutes late for the matinee show on Wednesday and only laster approximately three minutes before announcing she couldn't continue.
According to Deadline, an eye witness explained how Jodie said: "I can’t breathe in this air," before being helped off stage.
It's reported an understudy replaced Jodie after a short period, with a show's spokesperson telling Hollywood Reporter Jodie had "difficulty breathing due to poor air quality in New York City".
Smoke drifting down from major Canadian wildfires in the eastern part of the country had caused hazy skies and smoke problems further south in the US.
Mayor Eric Adams called the event "unprecedented" and said the advisory alerts in place until midnight on Wednesday were likely to be extended.
An Air Quality Health Advisory was put into effect for several regions, including Long Island, New York City Metro, Lower Hudson Valley, Upper Hudson Valley, Adirondacks, Eastern Lake Ontario, and Central New York.
It was reported that the city, which is in the its second day of difficulties due to the fires, had the second worst air quality of any big city in the world on Wednesday. Only Delhi was said to be worse.
Mayor Adams said: "We recommend all New Yorkers limit outdoor activity to the greatest extent possible.
"Those with pre-existing respiratory problems, like heart or breathing problems, as well as children and older adults, may be especially sensitive and should stay indoors at this time."
People have also been advised to wear a face mask when they need to go outside.
Officials say Canada's fire season is shaping up to be one of the worst in its history with the province of Quebec, dealing with 160 fires, appealing for international support.
