Jodie Chesney verdicts: Two teens guilty of schoolgirl's murder in Harold Hill as family says 'we got them'

Two teenagers have been found guilty of murdering schoolgirl Jodie Chesney in east London.

Svenson Ong-a-kwie, 19, from Romford, and a 17-year-old boy from Barking were today convicted at the Old Bailey.

There were cheers from Jodie's family as the verdicts were delivered in court.

Father Peter and sister Lucy erupted with shouts of “yes!” and clenched their fists.

There was little reaction from the defendants as the verdicts were delivered by the jury foreman after deliberating for five hours and 49 minutes.

The two killers will be sentenced on November 18.

Manuel Petrovic, 20, and a 16-year-old, both from Romford, were cleared by the jury. They were found not guilty of both murder and manslaughter.

Outside the court, Mr Chesney said: "We got two out of the four and I’m happy with the verdict.

“We got them."

Another family member added: "Justice for Jodie."

Seventeen-year-old Jodie was stabbed in the back as she sat with friends in Amy's Park, Harold Hill, east London, on the evening of March 1.

In a case of mistaken identity, Jodie was an innocent victim of "casual violence" in the drug-dealing world, jurors heard.

The popular student died of her injuries before she arrived at hospital.

In a victim impact statement earlier read out to the court, Mr Chesney said Jodie's murder had "destroyed" his life.

He said: "I have no idea how I am going to continue with my life or even come to terms with the loss."

Sister Lucy, 20, said: "Jodie was not only my sister, she was my best friend. Losing her is like losing half of myself.

"We went through everything together and she was always there for me and always putting everyone before herself. She gave me a type of love I will never feel again.

"Jodie will be greatly missed and the people who caused such tragedy to a whole family should hang their head in shame. You have ripped away a bright future that was destined to make a change to many lives."

Afterwards, Det Ch Insp Dave Whellams said Jodie's murder was a tragedy which shocked the nation.

He added: "It could have been anybody's daughter. She was a very nice girl, she had a small circle of friends, she did well at school, worked in the community, She was in the Scouts. She had been up to Downing Street. She was the girl next door.

"She was just an ordinary girl and that's the tragedy. She was an ordinary girl going about her ordinary business and has fallen foul of these people.

"They have gone there purposefully to stab somebody and they have not cared who they stabbed. They stabbed a 17-year-old girl in the back for no reason."
