Jockey taken to hospital after being thrown off horse at final jump of race

A jockey is being treated for an arm injury after he fell heavily from his horse at the final jump in a race.

Ciaran Gethings was in with a winning chance on Thruthelookinglass at Worcester when he was dislodged from the saddle.

On the approach, his mount suddenly jinked right and then left, which gave Gethings no chance of staying aboard. The sportsman appeared to collide with the hurdle as he landed, while jockeys riding the oncoming runners went around him.

Gethings was able to rise to his feet, dodge another horse and jog off the track. But a short time later he was stood down by the racecourse doctor and an ambulance took him to hospital.

Kim Bailey, the trainer of Thruthelookinglass, said: "Ciaran is waiting for an X-ray for a suspected broken arm."

Gethings' horse was alongside the eventual winner I'd Like To Know (8-1) when he made the errant late manoeuvre.

Trained by Chris Gordon, the five-year-old, who halved in price on-course from 16-1, was left clear and passed the post with eight-and-a-half lengths in hand.

Fame And Concrete, the 2-1 favourite, inherited the runner-up spot following the incident in the FBC Manby Bowdler Maiden Hurdle.

In the finale Gavin Sheehan deputised for Gethings, who has ten winners of his name for the 2022-23 season.

The final scorer on the Worcester card, Branson Missouri, sealed a 549-1 treble for jockey Tom Scudamore.

Sean Lycett's horse crossed the line 22 lengths ahead of the pursuers in the Cazoo Handicap Hurdle.

Scudamore had earlier struck aboard Miss Jeanne Moon (9-2), a birthday winner for trainer Neil Muholland.

The David Pipe-trained Sidi Ismael (9-1) was the middle leg of the hat-trick at the well-attended meeting.

The 9-1 shot stayed on dourly in the Mark Dunphy Supporting Racing Tee's Merchandise Handicap Hurdle.
