Joanna Lumley says it's the 'new fashion' for women to be 'victims' of sexism

Joanna Lumley made a shocking statement about women and said it is a 'new fashion' for them be 'victims' of sexism.

The Absolutely Fabulous star claimed it is 'pathetic' and compared it to sexism and harassment in the sixties.

She said women were 'a lot tougher' back in the day.

The actress said: "The new fashion is to be a victim, a victim of something. It’s pathetic. We have gone mad."

Speaking about the #MeToo movement, she added to Prospect Magazine: "If someone whistled at you in the street, it didn’t matter.

"If someone was groping, we slapped their hands. We were quite tough and looked after ourselves."

The actress spent three years as a photographic model at the beginning of her career.

Her acting career began in 1969 with an uncredited role in the film Some Girls Do, and as a Bond girl in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

She previously discussed how broke she was for the first 10 years of her career.

The actress said she did not get out of debt until she was 32 and had to live 'hand to mouth'.

This was even after landing her break in the 70s TV hit The New Avengers.

Joanna said: "It was fairly anxious, you think, ‘Where do I get the next 10 bob from?’ I couldn’t get out of the red.”

It was only when she starred in Sapphire and Steel from 1979 that she finally paid off her overdrafts.

Meanwhile, the 76-year-old recently made her opinions clear on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's new Netflix documentary.

Speaking on the Jeremy Vine show, she revealed she felt sorry for the royal family.

"I don't want to get in too deep because I know people have gone very sensitive on all sides about this, but it did seem to me a bit one-sided because everybody knows that the Royal Family can't really answer back," she said.

"So no matter what you say, they can't answer back. So I was anxious not to watch it, actually. I didn't want to watch it and I didn't watch the interview.

"But you can't avoid it because everybody's talking about it, it's on all the news and in all the papers. I feel terribly sorry about the whole thing."
