The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has named the party’s former women wing president Mahua Maji as its candidate for the coming Rajya Sabha polls in Jharkhand.
Ms. Maji’s name was announced by Chief Minister Hemant Soren in Ranchi. Mr. Soren, who was in Delhi a day ago, had said a consensus had been reached with the Congress for a joint Rajya Sabha nominee from the State. Mr. Soren said the decision was firmed up after over an hour-long meeting with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. The JMM is in alliance with the Congress and the Rashtriya Lok Dal in Jharkhand.
Ms. Maji was earlier the chairperson of the Jharkhand State Commission for Women. The JMM leader had in the past unsuccessfully contested elections from the Ranchi Assembly seat.
The BJP had on Sunday named Aditya Sahu as its nominee for the polls. Elections will be held on June 10 to fill 57 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 States.
