Harry Potter author JK Rowling has had so many death threats over her comments on the trans issue she “can’t give a shout-out” to all her potential murderers.
Rowling took to social media after highlighting a video by Dr David Bell, the psychiatrist behind a critical report on the gender identity unit at an NHS trust on the efforts to silence him and his concerns about children’s access to treatment.
But it led to a torrent of threats from pro-trans activists online.
She tweeted: “Me – shares video of experienced psychiatrist who turned whistle-blower, expressing his deep concern at high numbers of autistic children and children with internalised homophobia presenting at gender clinics.
“Them – (She then tagged a reply claiming she was a ‘repulsive bigot. Go f*** yourself, transphobic trash’.)
Rowling added: “I’m afraid I can’t give a shout-out to everyone promising to murder me – there are so many of you and I’m a busy woman – but this one deserves a mention for the nineties rave vibe, @TrustFundOzu.
“Ages ago, a friend of mine asked when I first felt like a grown-up. I’ve just deleted what I felt was a very funny response to a total d***head in my mentions and I don’t think I’ve ever felt more mature than I do right now, although I might have ruined it by saying d***head.”
Rowling recently blasted Labour and its leader Sir Keir Starmer who could “no longer be counted on to defend women’s rights”.
Starmer called for reform of gender recognition laws to introduce greater “respect and dignity” for transgender people after two of his shadow cabinet ministers struggled to define what a woman was. He has since said he is an “advocate of safe spaces for women”.
Rowling, a long-time supporter of the party, gave £1million to Labour in 2008.
