Jittery Celtic caller gets title fear as he pleads with partying punters 'for God's sake calm doon' - Hotline

Celtic are so close to the Premiership trophy they can almost smell the Brasso.

But the punters ringing up the Hotline want to see their side polish off the rest of this season’s six remaining fixtures quick sharp so they can avoid a repeat of painful slip-ups of old.

Ange Postecoglou’s men are six clear with six to play but Stefan Lomako, Whithorn , warned: “Rangers and Celtic have both blown titles after being almost over the line. Rangers blew their shot at 10 in a row with a loss to Killie back in 1998, allowing Celtic back in, and we’ve blown the title more than once.

“I'm confident we will see the Bhoys completely focused in the next few weeks because complacency can have a very cruel effect.”

And Duncan Morrison, Woking, is worried some fans are getting carried away, saying: “I’m no pessimist, but for God’s sake Celtic fans, calm doon. The last thing I want is another Helicopter Sunday which was horrible. Rangers fans have understandably given up the title but do we want ridiculed if it goes pear shaped? I'll wait till it's mathematically possible to celebrate, until then there's still a few matches to be played.”

Paul Connery said: “Celtic have been the best team in Scotland this season by quite a distance. Even when we have been playing not that great still manage to grind out results and I can see this being the start of a successful era. The league is not over not yet but I can’t see Celtic throwing this away, not with the way they are playing.”

The post-match bickering after Sunday's Old Firm clash has yet to simmer down.

Michael O’Leary, Glasgow, was first up to take issue with a previous caller.

He said: “Joe Smith described Celtic as one-trick ponies. Well, look who’s galloping towards the league title while the carthorses at Ibrox are still stuck in the stalls. Rangers can count themselves lucky that half of Celtic’s team were well below par. Roll on the Scottish Cup semi-final.”

Kenny Wilson, Moffat, added: “So Scott Cassidy reckons Rangers are going to lose the title because of the the winter break being moved in January? I never knew Celtic were given extra points cause of this. I’m surprised he’s not blamed Brexit yet! And as for their manager moving because of this? Nonsense, he left cause he knew Celtic were better and the league was coming home.”

Rangers supporter Jimmy Mac, Glasgow, said: "The way Celtic fans bump their gums is unbelievable. Your two goals on Sunday were lucky and both came from rebounds with the ball unfortunately falling to your players.

“Rangers were the better team overall.

“Celtic’s history in Europe sums them up. While Rangers earned Scotland a Champions League place, Celtic have been an embarrassment and will be out on their first group games ‘if’ they win the league.”

Chris McMenemy, Falkirk, said: “I’d like to ask Liam Birney if he knows when was the last time Rangers were awarded a penalty in a league match against Celtic. To save him some time it was 2010 at Celtic Park, and 2007 at Ibrox. Why let the truth spoil the set narrative though?”

Jack Border asked: “Why have Rangers not apologised for the bottle and other things that happened on Sunday?

“My own take is Rangers should be deducted points as banning fans from the ground doesn’t work.”

Away from Glasgow, Aberdeen fan Andrew Lamb, Fraserburgh, was sad to see the announcement that Andrew Considine’s time is up at Pittodrie.

He said: “Whilst no one can deny Andy Considine's loyal service to the club, sadly the player suffered a serious injury and is getting on now. I felt the offer of another year, albeit on reduced salary, was fair.”
