Jimmy Greaves' family send message to Harry Kane as he closes on Tottenham record

Jimmy Greaves will be looking down with great pride when Harry Kane breaks his record to become Tottenham's highest goalscorer of all time.

That’s according to Greavsie’s son Andy, who reckons the man revered by many as England’s greatest-ever goalscorer will be thrilled that Kane is the man to finally topple him. Greavsie’s mark of 266 goals for Spurs has stood for more than half a century — the last of them coming in 1970 in his 369th game.

Having scored twice against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, Kane now sits on 264 goals in 411 appearances. And no one would bet against him matching — or even passing — Greavsie in the FA Cup against Portsmouth on Saturday if, of course, he plays.

Andy, whose dad passed away 16 months ago aged 81, said: “Dad will be delighted for Harry. He always said records are there to be broken so he will be really pleased for him when he gets there and would wish him all the best.

“It has taken a long time for someone to get there. But I know that if the old man was still around he’d be sending Harry a message via the club or friends in the media to say big congratulations to him.

“People know what Dad was like, he was very humble and he’d be delighted that someone is going to break the record. He’d wish nothing but the best for Harry and would hope he can go on now and win some club trophies in his career as well.”

Kane met the former Chelsea, AC Milan, Spurs and West Ham star when he visited Tottenham ’s training ground in 2017, two years after suffering the major stroke that confined him to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

And Andy added: “Dad was a big fan of Harry. He always thought highly of anyone who could score goals. He used to say that scoring goals is one of the hardest jobs in football, even though he always made it look so easy, and so he took great delight in seeing people do it.

“He really liked Harry as a player and would always enjoy watching him play football, so if someone was going to break Dad’s record then I’m sure he’d be delighted it’s Harry who’s going to do it.

“I wasn’t there when they met with Mauricio Pochettino and a few of the other players, but I know Dad really enjoyed meeting them.”

Andy and the rest of the family could be forgiven for being sad to see the record broken. But he said: “I feel the same as Dad would have felt, which is that it’s great that Harry will go past him.

“I’m really pleased for him, I just wish he’d have brought the World Cup home before Christmas and it was a shame it didn’t happen. But he is a great player and, by all accounts, he is supposed to be a really nice guy. So on behalf of me and my father I can do nothing but wish him all the very best going forward.”
