Jimmy Garoppolo underwent offseason surgery on injured foot

Perhaps Jimmy Garoppolo would not have been available for the Super Bowl had the 49ers made it past the Eagles in last year’s NFC championship game.

The Athletic’s Tashan Reed and Vic Tafur reported Garoppolo had surgery in March on the left foot he injured in the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 13 win over the Dolphins. Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels is hopeful Garoppolo will return for training camp.

San Francisco never placed Garoppolo on Injured Reserve last year after his injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan remained hopeful the quarterback would be healthy enough to play if the team made a deep playoff run. Given that surgery was required in the offseason it’s hard to imagine Garoppolo would’ve been available in the Super Bowl.

This is the third time since his ACL tear in Week 3 of the 2018 season that Garoppolo has needed the offseason to recover from surgery. He had shoulder surgery last year that limited his trade market and led to his unlikely return to the 49ers. Now he’s dealing with surgery on his foot.

Garoppolo in March inked a three-year deal with the Raiders worth up to $72.75 million. He played in 57 games with 55 starts across his six seasons in San Francisco and threw 87 touchdowns with 42 interceptions while posting a 99.6 passer rating. The team went 38-17 in games he started.
