There were some questions about how quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would navigate practices knowing with the club moving on to new starting QB Trey Lance, but head coach Kyle Shanahan answered that question in a pre-practice press conference Wednesday. The veteran signal caller won’t have any presence when the 49ers open their first training camp practice Wednesday.
Shanahan told reporters Garoppolo won’t be required to hang out for practices. The QB was in the building Wednesday morning to complete his throwing program, and then left for the day. That will be the plan moving forward.
It was unclear what the plan would be for Garoppolo and San Francisco. The club is still hoping to trade him, and they can do so now that he’s passed a physical. They weren’t likely to force him to practice and he still has a throwing program to complete as he recovers from offseason surgery on his throwing shoulder.
The team opted to avoid any awkwardness of forcing Garoppolo to hang out in the team facility as they try to iron out his future. Ideally the saga will end sooner than later, but if the 49ers are hell bent on acquiring an asset for the QB, it could be awhile before there’s any movement.
