Jim Harbaugh had a spot-on response to the Chargers drafting Joe Alt

While we saw quite a few surprises during the first round of the 2024 NFL draft on Thursday night, the first five picks largely played out as we expected.

The Los Angeles Chargers rounded out those selections by taking Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt fifth overall. In Alt, who was the top offensive tackle prospect in the class and is largely seen as a can’t-miss prospect, they land immediate protection for Justin Herbert.

However, some fans were a bit disappointed that the Chargers didn’t opt to draft a new weapon for Herbert — potentially Malik Nabers, who went to the Giants one pick later — after losing Keenan Allen and Mike Williams this offseason.

Jim Harbaugh had a perfect response when asked about the decision, however, stating that the team views offensive linemen as weapons.

While it’s a very Jim Harbaugh response, he has a point. While it may not be the flashiest pick, protecting your franchise quarterback is very important. Having weapons in the passing game is great, but it’s moot if you can’t keep your quarterback upright and healthy.

The Chargers are likely to address receiver later in the draft, but for now, they’ve landed a key piece for the offensive line.
