Jim Goodwin offers no Aberdeen red card excuse as Anthony Stewart's 'rush of blood to the head' in Rangers loss lamented

Jim Goodwin says Anthony Stewart's red card was a disappointing moment as his Aberdeen side lost to Rangers 2-1 in the Viaplay Cup semi-final.

Bojan Miovski had fired the Dons into a half-time lead before Ryan Jack levelled things up. It was heading towards extra-time when the Pittodrie skipper clattered into Fashion Sakala and Nick Walsh was quick to brandish a red card. It's the defender's second sending off this season after being sent for an early bath in a Premiership defeat to St Mirren earlier in the campaign.

It was a bitter blow for Goodwin, who was proud of what his Aberdeen players put into the game. He told Viaplay: "The aim is to progress into the final and unfortunately we were unable to do that. But I thought it was a really good game, evenly balanced at times. We both had an equal number of chances to score goals. We knew how tough the game was going to be but I am very proud of the effort my boys have given me, particularly going into extra-time a man less as well.

"They stood up to them and caused Rangers one or two concerns at times as well. I was talking to a member of my staff at the time and as soon as he made the tackle I thought he was off the pitch.

"So no, we have no arguments, I think it was the right call but I can't fault the players as they gave us everything on a really poor pitch. There were lots of heavy legs towards the game. Supporters showed their appreciation towards the end which was great to see."

Goodwin then elaborated on Sportsound that it was not a decision in his skipper's best interests. He added: "What can you say, you can only say it as you see it.

"It was a poor decision by Anthony as I thought he could have stayed on his feet. I don't think the Rangers players was causing us too many problems in that wide area.

"He should have stayed up and jockeyed. But unfortunately a rush of blood to the head ultimately makes life very difficult for his teammates."
