Jim Goodwin offers Eamonn Brophy injury update as St Mirren face spell without key striker

Saints boss Jim Goodwin feels his Buddies suffered a double blow last night after Motherwell sealed a dramatic late draw in Paisley.

As well as losing all three points in extra-time which dented the club’s top-six hopes, the Buddies also lost top goalscorer Eamonn Brophy to what looks like a long-term ankle ligament injury.

The St Mirren manager is hoping he won’t be without his key striker for too long, while admitting his side would have been fortunate to get away with all three points after a poor affair at the SMISA Stadium.

He told Express Sport: “It’s obviously a bitter blow to lose that goal in the manner we did.

“It was poor defending, although it was a good finish.

“It would have been daylight robbery if we took three points on the night. Both teams were poor offensively.

“There was no free flowing football over the 90 minutes and Motherwell dragged us into a bit of a dogfight.

“We had to roll our sleeves up to grind out a result, but those two points are a bit of a sickener right now when you think about how the table would have looked after the other results went our way.

“We would be a point behind Aberdeen and Dundee United in sixth with a chance to go level with Hibs at the weekend.

"Eamonn is not looking great at the moment. We’ll wait for it to settle down and get it scanned.

“It’s a bitter blow obviously as Eamonn is our top goalscorer.

“We’re going to have to cross our fingers and hope for the best but the initial diagnosis isn’t great.

“It’s ligaments on the outside of his right ankle.

“He’s been a little bit unlucky over the last year or so with different injuries.

“He’s had a very stop-start season but he’s still our top goalscorer.

“He’s going to be a big miss, hopefully not for too long.”

There were some positives for the Buddies to take last night, including the performance of new boy Alex Gogic who netted his first goal for the club having only met his teammates an hour and a half before kick-off.

Former Kilmarnock and Rangers winger Jordan Jones also made his first appearance for the club, with Goodwin believing both will have a big impact in Paisley when they get up to full fitness.

Goodwin said: “I was delighted for Alex.

“He only met the boys an hour and a half before the game.

“Jordan Jones had a good debut as well, but neither of them are as fit as they need to be yet.

“We’ll get them up to speed, but we know what Jordan will bring to us.

“He was brilliant during his time at Killie and earned himself a big move to Rangers on the back of that.”
