Aberdeen have finally wielded the axe on Jim Goodwin after Dave Cormack’s patience snapped over a 6-0 annihilation at Hibs.
The Dons suffered yet more humiliation which proved the final straw for chairman Cormack, who had felt compelled to issue the manager a warning on Wednesday night. A dramatic day in Leith saw the away fans unfurl a "Goodwin out" banner before kick-off, and their anger was to rocket further when Aberdeen lost three goals in the first half. Lee Johnson’s side netted as many in the second 45 minutes to complete Goodwin’s misery – and moments later he was a goner.
Record Sport understands the Pittodrie powerbrokers had decided to announce the flop’s sacking two days after the club’s worst ever defeat – the 1-0 Scottish Cup loss at sixth tier Darvel. But Cormack stunned Scottish football when he U-turned, giving the embattled boss a reprieve on Wednesday evening. Most had expected the Irishman to be binned in midweek, especially as it came off the back of humiliation in the form of a 5-0 doing at Hearts.
But Cormack refused to bullet Goodwin then – but finally he has now. The sacking – the third in Cormack’s reign as chairman – means the Aberdonian is now looking for his third manager after Stephen Glass and Goodwin. The move was announced at 5:13pm – minutes after the final time whistle sounded in the capital.
A club statement read: "Following an unacceptable run of results since the World Cup break, the club confirms it has parted company with Jim Goodwin and first team assistant manager Lee Sharp with immediate effect." It’s believed Goodwin left Easter Road right after the final whistle, knowing he was for the axe.
