Jim Goodwin appointed Dundee United manager as former Aberdeen boss reveals 'sole aim'

Jim Goodwin has been appointed the new Dundee United manager in a sensational return to management after being sacked in January.

The former Aberdeen manager takes charge at Tannadice until the end of the season after Liam Fox was axed following his side's 4-0 defeat to Ross County in Dingwall on Saturday. Goodwin's appointment to the Tannadice hot seat comes after Sporting Director Tony Asghar sensationally left the club on Tuesday evening. The board and chief executive Luigi Capuano were tasked with appointing a new boss. Ironically, Goodwin's first game will be against former club Aberdeen when Barry Robson's men head down the A96 for the 6pm kick-off on Saturday evening.

United are now on their third manager this season after Jack Ross was sacked in August following just 10 weeks in charge and losing 9-0 to Celtic at Tannadice. Jack also crashed out Europa Conference League qualifying after a humiliating 7-0 loss to AZ Alkmaar in the second leg in the Netherlands.

Goodwin is back in management just 32 days after he was sacked by Aberdeen when his side lost 6-0 to Hibernian at Easter Road. That defeat came on the back of losing 1-0 to West of Scotland side Darvel in the Scottish Cup.

Speaking to the Dundee United website, Goodwin said: "I'm delighted to be given the opportunity to manage this fabulous club which has a rich history and a passionate fanbase. I recognise the job at hand - the sole aim for the remainder of the season is to maintain our Premiership status.

"I realise it is a huge task but I wouldn’t have taken the job on if I didn’t believe in the players, staff and my own abilities to be successful here. I’m incredibly excited to get started on my journey with Dundee United."
