Jim Carrey has been blasted when footage resurfaced of him “forcibly kissing” Alicia Silverstone at an awards show after he criticised Will Smith over the Oscars slap.

The comedian, 60, grabbed the actress and kissed her on the mouth as he accepted an award for Best Comedic Performance at the MTV Movie Awards in 1997.

Social media critics have branded the actor a “hypocrite” after the star said Will Smith should have been arrested for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars.

“I have nothing against Will Smith – he’s done great things, but that was not a good moment,” Carrey told CBS host Gayle King. “It cast a shadow over everyone’s shining moment last night… It was a selfish moment.”

He continued: “I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200m because that video is going to be there forever; it’s going to be ubiquitous.”

Since making the comments, the video where Carrey accepted an award an MTV show in the 1997 began circulating on Twitter.

In the clip, Carrey took to the stage to accept a gong for his performance in The Cable Guy before he grabbed presenter Alicia Silverstone and kissed her on the lips.

Carrey was 35-years-old at the time while Alicia was 20. He apologised to a “humiliated” Silverstone backstage, it was reported at the time.

Critics labelled the actor a “hypocrite” and a “scum” for publicly condemning Smith.

Among the comments, one person tweeted: “Jim Carrey says Will Smith ‘should have been’ arrested for hitting Chris Rock How about when Jim Carrey forcibly kissed Alicia Silverstone when he was going up on stage to accept an award?”

Another added: “Imagine being Jim Carrey sickened by a slap while also being the same Jim Carrey who forcefully kissed Alicia Silverstone.”

The Standard has approached Jim Carrey’s representatives for comment.

Smith sparked outrage following his confrontation with Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards.

Rock had compared Smith’s wife - who suffers from the medical condition alopecia - to "GI Jane".

The actor has since issued a public apology to Rock and he admitted his behaviour was “unacceptable”.
