At Tuesday’s State of the Union address, members of US Congress seized an opportunity to show their support for the plight of Ukraine through their clothing. It was First Lady Dr Jill Biden who led the way.
Pictured embracing Ukraine’s US ambassador Oksana Markarova, Biden wore a silk indigo gown by New York-based brand LaPointe which came with a sunflower embroidered on the sleeve. As Ukraine’s national flower, it acted as a subtle nod in solidarity to the country facing a brutal Russian invasion, and comes after the sunflower stitched mask she wore to a Black History Month event on Monday.
The American designer behind the dress, Sally LaPointe, is known not to shy from confrontation. On her website, she writes proudly: “I am not afraid to make a statement.”
Elsewhere at the address, others stuck to Ukraine’s blue and yellow flag colours when it came to dressing, as President Joe Biden spoke directly about the conflict.
"Stand and send an unmistakable signal to the world, to Ukraine," Biden said, as the crowd took to a standing ovation. "Bright, strong, resolved. We the United States of America stand with the Ukrainian people."
