Hawthorn are hoping to soften the blow of losing defender Jack Scrimshaw by welcoming back Changkuoth Jiath from injury.

Jiath has put his hand up to play against Carlton as the Hawks head to the AFL tribunal on Tuesday in a bid to free Scrimshaw from a three-match ban.

Scrimshaw collected Essendon's Jordan Ridley high in the second quarter of their round one win, leaving the Bombers defender concussed.

The incident was assessed as careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.

But defender Scrimshaw will miss at least one game regardless of whether the club is successful at the tribunal, suffering a concussion himself later in the second term.

Scrimshaw collided with teammate Josh Battle and left the ground bleeding heavily.

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell kept his cards close when asked whether a like-for-like type would come in for Scrimshaw.

"There's been pretty good performance at Box Hill (VFL team) on the weekend as well so there's a few guys putting their hand up," Mitchell said on Tuesday.

"He's (Scrimshaw) been an important player for us, really consistent in particular his last sort of 18 months so I'm disappointed for him.

"We'll miss him for hopefully not too long."

Jiath enters selection calculations after missing the Hawks' first two matches with a hip complaint picked up late in the pre-season.

The defender will be out to consolidate his spot under Mitchell after missing out on finals last season.

Jiath could not break back into the side after missing out on the final three games of the home-and-away campaign with a calf injury.

"Changkuoth has got through two games at Box Hill now," Mitchell said.

"He obviously had a bit of an interruption just late in the pre-season after a really good block before that so he's one of the options for selection.

"We'll finish off selection after training today (Tuesday) and he's one of the names that will be in the mix."
