Jhon Duran Charged After Angry Reaction To Red Card

Jhon Duran has been charged with improper conduct by the FA over his furious reaction to his red card against Newcastle on Boxing Day.

The Aston Villa striker was shown a straight red card after he was adjudged to have stamped on Newcastle defender Fabian Schar during the 3-0 defeat.

Some fans and pundits though felt that the red card was harsh. This was due to the Colombian appearing to be off-balance when he caught the defender.

Villa’s appeal was swiftly dismissed and Duran is currently in the middle of a three-match ban.

However, the 21-year-old could be hit with further punishment over his angry reaction to the sending off.

Duran Charged Over Angry Reaction To Red Card

The controversial incident which has led to Jhon Duran being charged happened in the 31st minute of Aston Villa’s defeat to Newcastle.

Duran’s studs scraped the back of Schar as he struggled to plant left foot on the ground and lost balance. The Colombian quickly held his hands up as if to say it was completely accidental. However, Newcastle players quickly protested to the referee.

A wide-eyed Duran held his arms up in disbelief as referee Anthony Taylor raised the red card in his direction. Duran appeared to hold his composure as he walked off the pitch – although looking angry at the decision.

However, it was here where he lost his composure as he kicked out at a pitch-side water bottle while backroom staff tried to calm him down.

An FA statement read: ‘Jhon Duran has been charged following the Premier League fixture between Newcastle United and Aston Villa on Thursday 26 December 2024.

‘It’s alleged that the Aston Villa forward acted in an improper manner in the 32nd minute of the fixture, after being sent off.’

It added that Duran has until Friday, January 3rd to respond to the charge.

Reaction To Duran’s Red Card

The tackle which has led to Jhon Duran being suspended for three games and handed an FA charge was criticised by pundits.

Speaking on Match of the Day on Boxing Day, host Gary Lineker said: “We believe Jhon Duran was very unlucky. We’ve had a good look at it.”

Joe Hart agreed as he added: “I think it’s a harsh decision. I think the referee guesses on the reaction of the (Newcastle) players.

“When he plants his left foot, he twists his ankle when he puts it down. So automatically, that pushes you to your left-hand side. He has to come back in which is why he stands on him.”

Duran missed Villa’s 2-2 draw with Brighton on Monday. He is set to be out for the league clash with Leicester and the FA Cup tie with West Ham.

Any extension to that ban could see him miss Villa’s following game with Everton on January 15.
