In her new book Touched by the Sun: My Friendship With Jackie, musician Carly Simon opens up about her friendship with former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
The singer met Jackie in 1983 on Martha's Vineyard. At the time, Jackie was 54 while Simon was 38. Simon describes Jackie as "the mother I never had."
In an interview to promote the book Simon, now 74, claimed that JFK was with one of his mistresses when Jackie delivered one of the couple's children.
In the memoir, she describes Jackie as "unbothered" by her husband's numerous reported affairs because she believed he loved her more than the other women.
“In a cheerful but resigned way she told me that of course she knew about them. She just didn’t mind their presence as much as she might have, because she knew he [Kennedy] loved her much, much more than any of his dalliances," Simon writes in her memoir.
Simon told NBC News, "I think that some of the things had more effect on her," while discussing his affairs.
"For instance, his not being there for the birth of a child. For his being off with a mistress while she was in the hospital. There are various things that he did that, by comparison, must have hurt more," Simon said.
Kennedy was there when Jackie gave birth to their children Caroline, John Jr. and Patrick, who died when he was an infant. But reports say that he was not present when she gave birth to a stillborn child in 1956. Instead, he was reportedly on a yacht in the Mediterranean.
In the book Simon also claims that Jackie's second husband, Aristotle Onassis, was also unfaithful to her.
