A holiday jet was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger died during a flight from Tenerife to Nottingham.

The Jet2 aircraft diverted to Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport in Spain on Friday afternoon after crew reported a man in his 70s was suffering a severe medical emergency.

The plane, which was making its way to the UK, landed at the Galician capital where an ambulance had been sent to the terminal. However, the passenger was pronounced dead upon touchdown. His nationality has not yet been confirmed.

Flight LS676 had departed the Canary Islands at 7.05pm before the mid-air emergency was declared, according to local media outlet Diario de Avisos.

The crew had notified air traffic control that a man was experiencing a severe medical emergency and was in need of urgent assistance, forcing the aircraft to divert to mainland Spain.

Both Jet2 and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office have been approached for comment.

It comes after an EasyJet flight to Manchester was forced to make an emergency landing in Greece after the pilot collapsed at the controls last week.

Panic erupted on board as cabin crew abandoned their drinks trolleys and rushed to the front of the aircraft while screaming for medical assistance.
