Jet2 becomes first airline to ditch face mask rules for passengers on flights

Jet2 has become the first airline to scrap a requirement for passengers to wear face masks on its flights.

Other airlines such as TUI, British Airways, Ryanair and easyJet continue to operate face mask policies for passengers.

Brits heading on holidays on Jet2 flights won't be required to wear face coverings during the journey - although they will still be required to wear face masks in airports and onboard transfers to accommodation dependent on a destination's local rules.

It's worth noting that the change only applies to passengers flying from England and Northern Ireland.

A statement on the Jet2 website explains: "It’s no longer a legal requirement to wear a face mask at our airports or onboard our planes. However, as per UK Government guidance, we recommend that you continue to wear a face mask in these spaces, and you will need to wear one when you get to your overseas destination."

For passengers departing from Scotland, it's still a legal requirement for all passengers aged six or over to wear a face mask at Scottish airports and onboard planes travelling to and from Scotland - even if you're fully vaccinated.

You can find out more about Jet2's face mask policy on jet2.com.

The airline does warn passengers that "there may also be additional face mask restrictions in some places, and the rules around ages may differ per destination too".

As of February 24, it is no longer a legal requirement in England and Scotland to wear a face mask.

Brits' holiday options have been increasing in recent weeks with 12 countries having eased restrictions around pre-travel Covid tests and quarantine, including the likes of Italy, Cyprus and Canada.

Meanwhile Iceland took things one step further earlier this month when it scrapped all of its Covid travel rules, making it one of three countries Brits can visit without needing any tests or meeting vaccine requirements.

Popular hotspots such as Portugal, Greece, Cyprus and France have all recently also axed a requirement for pre-travel Covid tests, provided travellers are fully vaccinated against Covid.

If you're heading abroad, make sure to check the latest Foreign Office travel advice as this includes important information such as local face mask rules and other Covid travel rules you may need to be aware of.
