Jessie Marsch gets Leeds United transfer wish as huge hurdle removed for first summer signing

There was much more than a single signing hanging on Leeds United securing their Premier League safety, with the club having worked so hard to return to the top flight two years ago. But with safety assured thanks to a 2-1 win at Brentford and Burnley losing at home to Newcastle United, the club can set about their summer plans under Jessie Marsch with renewed vigour.

That means getting to work in the transfer market and the first deal expected to be completed is that of USA international Brenden Aaronson. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder could have been a Whites player already after two failed attempts to bring him into the club in the January transfer window.

While Leeds were thwarted by Red Bull Salzburg in their attempts to bring him to Elland Road four months ago, that is not expected to be a problem this summer with reports a deal has already been agreed in principal. Leeds are expected to pay around £25m to land the exciting young talent, who has won two league titles in Austria since making the move from Philadelphia Union in 2020.

The sticking point to any potential deal was Leeds' place in the Premier league, but with that now assured, reports in America suggest a deal is imminent, with his former club the Union picking up between 10-20 per cent of any transfer fee. With 13 goals and 16 assists in 66 appearances for RB Salzburg, not to mention Champions League experience, Aaronson's arrival will be met with excitement among the Leeds fans.

Whites boss Jessie Marsch knows Aaronson well having worked with him at RB Salzburg and while the deal was initially planned before Marcelo Bielsa's departure, Marsch has been keen to see it get over the line to add the player to his options for next season.
