Jesse Marsch sends defiant sack message after Leeds fans chant Marcelo Bielsa's name

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch insists he has the backing of the board after his team's 2-0 defeat against Leicester on Thursday evening.

The Foxes secured the points at the King Power Stadium thanks to an own goal from Robin Koch and a Harvey Barnes strike. Leeds have now lost three consecutive Premier League games and sit just outside of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Pressure on Marsch is growing due to Leeds' battling start to the season. Travelling fans were heard chanting popular ex-manager Marcelo Bielsa's name at the King Power Stadium on Thursday evening, as support for Marsch at Elland Road starts to dwindle.

Yet the American coach remains defiant. "The board, we are totally unified," Marsch told reporters at full-time. "That's not an issue. One of the things I saw before I came was the way the board supported Marcelo for many years. I can only say I felt that same support.

"Everybody's p****d off. We're all feeling like we're letting ourselves down but we've got to be ready to stop the bleeding and fight for each other on Sunday [against Fulham ]. It's the first time I've heard that from fans. They have the right.

"I'm here doing what I can to help. It's nothing against the fans, maybe I should go over to them next time no matter what, I need to say sorry to them. I know I'm supported by the club.

"There were parts of the first half which were quite good but we lost the ball and almost their first time down the pitch they get a weird own goal. It was a big hole we dug for ourselves. It wasn't as if it was terrible but we let ourselves down."

Leeds were Premier League regulars before their relegation in May 2004. They went on to spend 16 years outside of the top flight before Bielsa arrived at Elland Road and led them back to the promised land by winning the Championship title in July 2020.

Bielsa achieved a ninth-placed finish during Leeds' first season back in the Premier League but was sacked in February with the team languishing two points above the relegation zone. The Argentine was still a popular figure at Elland Road at the time of his exit.

Marsch managed to keep Leeds in the Premier League last season following a 2-1 win against Brentford on the final day of the season to finish 17th. Yet they've struggled to put a good run of form together this term and haven't won a game since August.

Bielsa is widely regarded as one of the most underrated managers in the world after influencing the likes of Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino. The 67-year-old coached Argentina, Chile, Athletic Bilbao and others before joining Leeds in June 2018.

Yet Marsch also has an impressive CV. He's won silverware in the US with New York Red Bulls and in Austria with Red Bull Salzburg, although he lasted just four months at Red Bull's German club RB Leipzig before his dismissal last December.
