Jesse Marsch’s order to Patrick Bamford as striker returns to Leeds United first team picture

Jesse Marsch has told Patrick Bamford to “stop worrying” and focus on enjoying football ahead of his Leeds United return. Injury problems have plagued the 29-year-old’s career over the last 18 months.

A stellar breakthrough season in the Premier League two years ago saw Bamford score 17 goals and receive international recognition. The gung-ho system adopted by Marcelo Bielsa appeared tailor-made for the forward as he was playing the best football of his career.

But several long-term injuries have stalled Bamford’s progress - and all but ended his England career. In the meantime, Leeds have struggled without an out-and-out striker.

Rodrigo has rediscovered the golden touch that persuaded the Whites to fork out a record-breaking fee but, on occasions, Leeds still look impotent in attack. Bamford - who has not played since October 29 - has been named on the bench by Marsch for the clash against Aston Villa.

“It was hard for Pat when he was out,” the American told Sky Sports pre-match. “He missed playing football and it’s sort of been that way for a year. The last 10 days, in training, he’s looked lively and looked like he’s happy to be playing again, so that’s been my emphasis with him.

“Stop worrying about missing chances, stop worrying about whether we play Rodri (Rodrigo) or you, who’s coming off the bench… just enjoy your football. I think then we can see the best of him and that will be the goal tonight.”
