Jesse Marsch's message to Leeds United's Brenden Aaronson over limited World Cup role for USA

Jesse Marsch has backed Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson to be 'ready' for whatever role he is handed for the United States at the 2022 World Cup.

Aaronson is yet to start for the USMNT at the finals in Qatar, and has come off the bench in all three group games as his side progressed to the Round of 16.

USA are undefeated at the tournament, drawing against Wales and England respectively, before securing progression to the knockout stages courtesy of a 1-0 win over Iran on Tuesday.

Marsch claims that Aaronson accepts his role in the squad, and expects the Leeds star to make an impact regardless of whether he starts or comes off the bench.

"I think he accepts the role fully," the Leeds boss told Men in Blazers before the Iran victory. "He's still young, he knows it's a good group, a good team. He's done well for himself and well enough that he should first option off the bench.

"He can wrap his mind around that role and do a really good job in it. If he were to start on any given day, he can do a job and he understands. He is a good player and he can help the team.

"I think that's what is most important. I texted Brenden before the tournament started and that was one of the things I said to him. 'Don't worry about what your role is, just commit to the team, give everything you have. The World Cup is a special moment. Believe in the group, believe in the coach, and now when you're called upon be ready to make an impact in every way that you possibly can'.

"Brenden doesn't require big reminders like that. He's such a good kid, he's a team player all the way and he'll do whatever it takes. Obviously the two games I'm watching, I'm like, 'make a sub, get him on' because I love the kid so much. But I know that he'll be ready in every role that he's needed."
