Jesse Marsch's Leeds United relief as Crysencio Summerville gets reward for patience

Leeds United brought an end to their eight-game winless run by stunning Liverpool to win 2-1 at Anfield.

Here's a look at the winners and losers on the night.

Winners

Crysencio Summerville

Summerville has had to be patient over the last year or so but he got his reward at Anfield as he popped up with the winning goal in the 89 th minute of the game to stun the home crowd. The 20-year-old, fresh from scoring a consolation goal against Fulham last week, was making just his second Premier League start for the Whites, but he came up with the goods to snap Leeds’ winless run.

Wilfried Gnonto was the man who played the ball into the area for Patrick Bamford to feed Summerville. He still had plenty to do, but he managed to keep his cool and poke the ball beyond the outstretched Alisson and into the corner of the net to send the travelling fans wild in the Anfield Road End of the ground.

Summerville might not start every week moving forward but he’s well and truly made a name for himself in a Leeds shirt.

Rodrigo

The striker won’t score many easier goals than the one he bagged in the opening minutes of the game to silence the Anfield crowd. Lurking on the shoulder of Virgil van Dijk, the Spain international was alert in the middle when a loose back pass from Joe Gomez failed to find Alisson.

Rodrigo was unchallenged as he latched onto it and he simply poked the ball home in front of the Kop. In truth, he didn’t have the brightest of games but he kept plugging away and pressed well before being replaced by Patrick Bamford early in the second half.

Illan Meslier

The Frenchman kept Leeds in the game at times at Anfield with a series of saves to deny the likes of Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino. He didn’t shower himself in glory in the build-up to Salah’s goal, flapping at a cross that meant he was out of position when the ball came back in.

However, he redeemed himself and then some in Merseyside as he made stop after stop to frustrate the home crowd. He was Leeds’ best on the night and while Summerville will get the headlines, Meslier deserves plenty of plaudits, too.

Jesse Marsch

The head coach was booed as he walked around Elland Road following last Sunday’s home defeat to Fulham and it seemed as though the walls were beginning to close in on the American head coach. As such, the win could not have come at a better time for him, easing the pressure around him and boosting the crowd’s faith that he is the right man for the job.

His side were well-drilled, energised and dangerous from the off at Anfield and they got the result they deserved. Their relentless pressing forced Liverpool into mistakes and they were able to capitalise on them as they handed Liverpool their first home league defeat in front of fans since April 2017.

The challenge is to build on this performance and result against Bournemouth next weekend.

Losers

Luis Sinisterra

The winger was one of a number of players rated as a doubt by the head coach during his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon, but he was the only man to miss out. He’s been one of Leeds’ biggest threats on the ball this season and he would have been confident of inflicting damage at Anfield against a shaky backline.

Crysencio Summerville came into the side in place of the Colombian international and he may just have staked a claim to start next week against Bournemouth.
