Jesse Marsch opens up on turning down Leicester City and Southampton and what comes next

Former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch says the timing wasn't right after approaches from Southampton and Leicester City. The club parted company with Marsch following a dismal run of results but was still approached by their fellow strugglers after his sacking.

The Saints had parted company with Nathan Jones and looking for their third manager of the season with Marsch in the driving seat, but the ex-Whites boss turned them down. Weeks later Leicester City would come calling following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, but the Foxes would get the same result.

“I would say that both clubs were amazing and the people were fantastic, but the timing wasn’t right,” Marsch told The Athletic.

Marsch has been linked with taking over USMNT but has been non-committal about where his future lies and whether there are other opportunities in Europe. Former Southampton director of football operations, Matt Crocker, has been hired by U.S Soccer, drawing a connection between Marsch and becoming the next national team manager.

“There have been a lot of little discussions about potential opportunities, which I always love those discussions because it’s important to get to the bottom of understanding what the vision is, from my perspective and from different clubs’ perspective,” Marsch added.

“I’m fortunate that there’s still people that are interested in what I do. I still love coaching and my next job will be all about finding the best fit possible.”

The former Whites boss was assistant to Bob Bradley during the USMNT's World Cup in 2010 and is familiar with a number of players in the national set-up.
