Leeds United broke a 22-year record for the most number of cards in a single Premier League campaign last term. The Whites entered the referee’s notebook on 104 occasions in the 2021/22 season, with 101 of those yellow cards, and the remaining three red.
Leeds eclipsed the previous record set by Derby County in 1999/00, who received a total of 97 cards, 93 of which were yellow. Quite staggeringly, Leeds received 22 more yellow cards than joint second place Aston Villa and Newcastle United.
Leeds averaged 2.7 cards per game over the course of the season and it was that ill-discipline towards the end of the campaign that nearly cost them a place in the Premier League. This season, though, Jesse Marsch has clearly looked to rectify that problem with the numbers much lower in the opening six matches.

Marsch’s side have picked up 13 yellow cards so far, averaging out at 2.16 per game. That would equal 82 over a 38-game season, which while still high, is a marked improvement on their numbers from last year.
And while it took 22 years for Leeds to eclipse the previous record set by Derby for cards, another Premier League team is already on course to beat the Whites’ total from last season. Manchester United have already been carded 20 times in six matches so far, averaging 3.33 per game. This equates to an incredible 126 over a 38-game season.
