Manchester United have told Jesse Lingard they will not sanction a deadline-day exit for him.
Manager Ralf Rangnick had given his blessing to leave on loan on the final day of the window but the Old Trafford board have blocked any late deal.
West Ham and Newcastle had been interested in a move for Lingard, but the 29-year-old will now see out the final six months of his deal at United and leave as a free agent in the summer.
The Hammers had been keen to bring the midfielder back to the club following his stellar spell at the London Stadium last season.
Having seen previous approaches knocked back, West Ham made one last push on the final day of the window.
They returned to Lingard after seeing a £60million offer for Darwin Nunez rejected by Benfica, while an approach for Leeds United forward Raphinha was quickly knocked back earlier this month.
Lingard has been frustrated by Manchester United’s handling of his situation throughout the January window and is thought to be gutted by the latest developments.
West Ham boss David Moyes wants to add to his attacking options this month as his side battle for a Champions League place, but it would take a remarkable turn of events to see any new players come in before the 11pm deadline.
Lingard scored nine goals and set up five in 16 games on loan at West Ham last season as they finished sixth and qualified for the Europa League.
