Jesse Lingard responds as Nottingham Forest ace ends 24-year wait for big moment

Nottingham Forest teammates congratulated Switzerland international Remo Freuler on scoring the goal that saw his national team advance to the World Cup knockout stages.

Three minutes into the second half of his side's game against Serbia, Freuler finished off a well-worked move to put the Swiss ahead with what turned out to be the final goal of the game which secured second place in Group G behind Brazil only on goal difference, after they were beaten in the group stages for the first time in 24 years by Cameroon. Former Liverpool and Stoke City player Xherdan Shaqiri had initially put Switzerland ahead before Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic and Serbia strike-partner Dusan Vlahovic both scored to see the lead change hands.

Breel Embolo equalised before half-time and that momentum continued after the break as Shaqiri chipped a ball into the box which Ruben Vargas backheeled into the path of Freuler to half-volley home. The strike was the Reds midfielder's sixth international goal and first at a major tournament, also the first since 1998 for a Forest player at a World Cup.

After the match, Freuler posted a photograph of the whole squad posing on the Stadium 974 pitch, captioned "what a team", to mark their progression to the round of 16. Switzerland have now reached the knockout stages at a fifth consecutive major tournament for the first time, dating back to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, with Freuler a part of squads at the last three of them.

A trio of Forest teammates were quick to show their support for their colleague. Jesse Lingard commented "baller" accompanied by a red love heart, while Ryan Yates and Emmanuel Dennis replied with a selection of fire and clapping hands emojis.
