Jesse Lingard posts cryptic image 24 hours after Manchester United snub

Jesse Lingard has posted a cryptic image on Instagram without a caption after he failed to feature during Manchester United's win at Old Trafford on Monday night.

The 29-year-old is out of contract in the summer and looks likely to leave the club he has represented since he was a child. Lingard was named among the substitutes for Monday night's comfortable triumph over Brentford but the Warrington-born attacker failed to feature.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick opted to start Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata - two players who are also set to leave in the summer - before replacing them with Phil Jones and Fred. The German also allowed Edinson Cavani a farewell appearance at Old Trafford, and his decision to bring on the veteran striker left Lingard's camp furious.

The win over the Bees brought the curtain down on United's home campaign as the players embarked on a brief lap of honour. On Tuesday night, Lingard posted a picture from his early years at the club.

In the aftermath of Monday's game, Lingard's brother Louie Scott posted a message on his Instagram. He said: "20 years of blood sweat and tears, 4 domestic trophies, 3 cup final goals, not even a farewell.

"No wonder it's Conference League next year. Attacking players for celebrations when the clubs being sold to the super league ok.

"Class of 92, Busby Babes, you're ran by people who don't even know the offside trap. Classless and the fans need to realise. Goodnight, godbless!

"Been there since nine years of age and didn't even get a send off!!! Well done bro your family are proud."
