Jesse Lingard departure confirmed by Manchester United

Manchester United have confirmed Jesse Lingard is leaving the club.

Lingard, 29, is out of contract on June 30 and it has been expected for some time he would leave upon its expiration.

West Ham are interested in re-signing Lingard after his productive spell on loan at the club last season.

The England international joined the United academy at the age of seven and was a member of the 2011 FA Youth Cup-winning squad.

Lingard made his United debut against Swansea in August 2014 before cementing his place in Louis van Gaal's side the next season, scoring the winner in the 2016 FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace.

Lingard was also a scorer in United's 2016 Community Shield win against Leicester and the 2017 League Cup triumph over Southampton. The forward came on in the Europa League final victory over Ajax later that season.

Despite excelling under Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, Lingard struggled for form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once he was named permanent manager.

Lingard went more than two years without a Premier League start until he lined up against Leeds in February and he endured a 19-month league goal drought.

West Ham signed Lingard on loan in January last year and he scored nine goals in 16 appearances. West Ham were prepared to sign him permanently for £25million but Solskjaer demurred and Lingard stayed. He only started four times under Solskjaer and interim manager Ralf Rangnick last term.

Lingard's United career was blighted by a string of social media snafus, including a puerile video when the team bus was under attack upon arrival for the final game at the Boleyn Ground in May 2016 and an infamous holiday video in 2019.

Lingard and his brother, Louie Scott, were criticised for their social media activity this season amid United's struggles.

Lingard scored 35 goals in 232 games for United.
