Essential work to fit a new gas pipe that has closed a section of Jesmond Dene Road should be completed early next week.
The closure, between Jesmond Dene Road's junctions with Osborne Road in Jesmond and Moorfield in South Gosforth, led to lengthy queues on Monday morning as commuters and parents on the school run faced frustrating waits.
The reason is for essential gas works to replace a pipe that has had to repaired 'several' times recently, Northern Gas Network says.

"The old metallic main is being replaced with new plastic pipe to minimise the risk of any future inconvenience," they said.
Jesmond Dene Road road was first closed for the works on Friday November 4, 2022. Newcastle City Council expects the work to be completed on Monday November 14, with the road likely to reopen on Monday November 14 or Tuesday November 15.
Northern Gas Network site manager Jim Dennison said: “We appreciate that these are short notice closures and we are extremely sorry for any inconvenience customers may experience as a result, but they are absolutely necessary to protect our workforce – the safety of our engineers and members of the public is our number one priority."
Mr Dennison apologised for the disruption and said Northern Gas Network is working to finish the repair as safely as its staff can.
