Roughly a month and a half removed from the Dallas Cowboys’ latest humiliating playoff defeat, it feels like they’re pulling out all the wrong stops.
There’s the famed modern innovator of the “run-run-pass,” Brian Schottenheimer, coordinating the Dallas offense now. Meanwhile, Mike McCarthy will not only get to use his stale scheme from Green Bay, but he’ll apparently also get to coach as long as the legendary Tom Landry, too!
All of these baffling developments aside, some of owner Jerry Jones’ latest comments might be the most perplexing.
As criticism swirls around Dak Prescott and his inability to get it done in January, Jones got on his soapbox about the veteran QB. He essentially professed that Prescott, a 29-year-old veteran entering his eighth professional season, can’t be fairly judged off one campaign alone.
In the process, Jones used the career arc of Tom Brady — yes, that Tom Brady, there isn’t another notable one in football — to demonstrate Prescott still has his best football ahead of him.
Uh, sure. OK. Whatever you say, Jerry:

Jones not even knowing how long Prescott has been an NFL quarterback aside (and it’s a big aside): Are we sure he ever watched Brady play? You know, arguably the most clutch player in pro football history, a.k.a. the antithesis of Prescott to this point?
Jones’ argument amounts to Brady winning three MVPs and four Super Bowls after he turned 29. Never mind that Brady achieved such gold in another 16 years of play, Jones seems to (want to) believe that Prescott can achieve similar unprecedented success. Why he chose to compare his much-maligned QB to the GOAT is anyone’s best guess. I would’ve picked someone more reasonable, but that’s just me!
I don’t know how to break the bad news politely; I’ll say bless your heart, Jerry. It’s this kind of overzealous rationalizing that has everyone laughing at the Cowboys come winter every season.
