Sean McVay has been the youngest head coach in the NFL since he was hired by the Los Angeles Rams at the age of 30 back in 2017. He’s no longer going to be the youngest in the league, however.
The New England Patriots are hiring Jerod Mayo as their next head coach and they plan to officially introduce him with a press conference next week. Like McVay, Mayo is 37 years old, but he’s a month younger than the Rams coach, thus making him the youngest head coach in the NFL.
Mayo, who played for the Patriots from 2008-2015, only began his coaching career in 2019 as New England’s inside linebackers coach. He’s remained in that role for the last five years, so this is a big jump going from position coach to head coach without being a coordinator in between.
Mayo was an integral part of the Patriots defense, though, and was essentially viewed as a co-defensive coordinator with Steve Belichick.
Mayo will usher in a new era in New England with Bill Belichick out, hoping to revive one of the most storied franchises in the NFL.
