Jerod Mayo’s explanation for beating Bills and losing No. 1 draft pick

Moments before the New England Patriots fired him, former head coach Jerod Mayo addressed media members following the team’s 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills in the regular season finale.

With the victory, the Patriots lost the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NFL draft. They currently own the No. 4 overall pick after finishing the season with a 4-13 record.

Mayo was asked to give a response to Patriots fans who might have been upset by the team winning a game they would have greatly benefitted from losing.

“Anytime we step foot, I’ve said this over the last couple of weeks, as a player and as a coach, we always want to go out there and win,” said Mayo.

The Patriots fired Mayo after the press conference.

It brought an abrupt end to a one-year run for Mayo in New England. The season started off promising with the Patriots recording an upset victory in the opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, it was a downward slide from that point on.

The Patriots seemingly fell off a cliff, and they were never able to get back on track. It ultimately led to another losing season in New England and Mayo’s exit.
