The New England Patriots are nearing a decision on their next starting quarterback, and they expect to have that answer by next Monday night, according to coach Jerod Mayo.
Rookie Drake Maye closed the gap on veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett in the preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles and ensuing training camp practices.
It remains an open competition for the job with Brissett leading the way as the more experienced option under center. When appearing on “The Greg Hill Show” on Monday, Mayo claimed the Patriots would stick to their developmental plan at quarterback, even if it isn’t the most popular decision.
In many ways, it sounded like he was preparing fans ahead of time for Brissett to be named the starter. However, he’s still calling it an open competition between the two quarterbacks.
“It’s still a competition and Jacoby (Brissett) is still QB1,” Mayo said ahead of Wednesday’s practice.

It’s always possible that Maye blows everyone away in the preseason finale to the point where he can’t be denied the starting job. There’s also the fact that Brissett has looked shaky in recent outings. He had some errant throws and a bad red zone interception against the Eagles.
If he doesn’t clean up his game, he could play himself out of the opportunity.
