Jerod Mayo reveals reason for playing Drake Maye against the Jets

(This story was updated to correct a misspelling/typo)

New England Patriots fans got their first look at rookie quarterback Drake Maye in Thursday’s 24-3 loss to the New York Jets. Coach Jerod Mayo offered his reasoning for putting the signal-caller in the game, as the Patriots dropped to 1-2 on the season.

Maye went 4-of-8 passing for 22 yards. He also showed off his mobility by running for a nine-yard first down on his one drive of the game. It was a promising drive for the quarterback, as he looks to become the franchise signal caller in New England.

“I thought it was a good opportunity for him to go out there with the ones and put a few drives together, move the ball. We’ll watch the film and evaluate,” Mayo said after the game, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

The quarterback position needs a spark in New England, and Maye showed promising signs in the short time he was in the game. At the very least, he gave the coaching staff something to think about as the schedule gets even tougher from here on out.
