The New England Patriots will give the starting quarterback job to Jacoby Brissett, but they will also continue working with rookie Drake Maye behind the scenes. Coach Jerod Mayo laid out a plan to develop the quarterback, when speaking with media members.
Mayo indicated that Maye will continue to get reps during practice. However, Brissett will be the quarterback with the starters during those sessions.
Mayo also noted that Maye will have “certain projects” to help him get mental reps as he develops. Maye showed promise throughout training camp and the preseason. He went 21-of-34 passing for 192 yards, one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown in the three exhibition games.
HC Jerod Mayo says QB Drake Maye will continue to get some reps during practice, but noted it’ll mostly be Jacoby Brissett with the starters.
Mayo also stressed the importance of scout team reps for Maye.

It’s going to be important for the Patriots to develop Maye, as they look for him to be the future franchise quarterback. That kind of work takes time and patience for the best possible outcome.
