The New England Patriots have made a decision on their starting quarterback for the 2024 season.
Coach Jerod Mayo called for a press conference on Thursday where he finally revealed that the team would be starting veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett over rookie Drake Maye in the regular season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.
“We have decided, or I have decided, that Jacoby Brissett will be our starting quarterback this season,” Mayo said, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “In saying that, as an organization, we are 100% behind Jacoby. There is no ‘You got a guy right here, you got a guy right there.’ We’re 100% behind Jacoby.”
The Patriots are ultimately making a decision to continue developing Maye behind the scenes before throwing him into the fire right away.
Some may not agree with that decision, and others will be able to accept the long-term aspect of it. The Patriots offense isn’t fit for a rookie quarterback under center. There are serious offensive line issues and lingering questions at receiver.
It’ll be “Maye Day” someday. Just not today.
